There is no two ways about the disturbing effect of this error during Windows updates than to allow it to restart properly. The major causes of the problem are related to two files number in the Updates list. They are KB2756872 and KB2770917 – Updates for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems. There are others causative files as well. It can be due to Windows updates drivers compatibility problem. Another thing this trouble seems to be common among NVIDIA graphic adapter based systems. Which means both reference numbers can be graphic adapter drivers update beside cumulative updates.
Nevertheless, there is a way to get around this error during update so that it won’t come up while trying to complete Windows updates.

Hi Conor,
Thank you for posting your query on this forum.
Usually, we get this error when some problem occurs during the installation of one or more recent Windows Updates and thus, while restarting the computer, Windows 8 cannot configure the failed updates and tries to revert back the changes that were made.
In some cases, the computer may not boot properly and is stuck in a reboot loop. I understand that you are facing the same situation on the computer making it unusable. So, in this case, you may turn off the computer manually by pressing and holding its power button for a few seconds and then try to restart it again.
Once you are able to boot into the computer, you may first find the KB Number of the updates that has failed to install. To find the KB numbers of the failed updates, follow these steps:
a) Press “Windows Logo” + “W” keys on the keyboard and type “Update history” in the search box.
b) Click on the option “View your update history for Windows”.
This will show you the name and the KB number of the updates that were installed successfully and the updates that had failed to install. You may make a note of those updates and let us know in your reply.

I understand that you have already run the Windows Update Troubleshooter on the computer. It would be great if you can check the troubleshooting report and share the details with us. If you haven’t tried the suggestions given by the troubleshooter, then try that and check if that helps. You may also share the details of the SFC Scan that you have already tried on the computer.
The reason why the Windows Update fails on the computer could be due to the third party software conflicts on the computer. So, I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if that helps.
If you have any third party security program installed on the computer, then you may try disabling it temporarily and then try installing the Windows Updates and check the status.
Windows 7 Updates Failed To Install
Method 1: Temporarily disable the third party security program. (If you have installed any)
I request you to contact the technical support for the security program to temporarily disable it and then check if that resolves the issue.
Important: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
After disabling the third party security program on the computer, run the Windows Update and let us know the status. If the issue persists, then let us check if there are any other software conflicts on the computer. Let us perform a clean boot and then try installing the updates manually.
Method 2: Perform a Clean Boot and then reinstall the update manually.
A clean boot helps to eliminate software conflicts and to determine what is causing the problem. To perform a clean boot, please refer to the section “How to perform a clean boot” and follow the instructions for “Windows 8.1 and Windows 8” from this link:
You may please note that performing a clean boot does not fix the actual issue. It just helps us in identifying the root cause of the issue.
Important: After you have finished troubleshooting, refer to the section “How to reset the computer to start as usual after clean boot troubleshooting” for “Windows 8 and Windows 8.1”, to reset the computer to start as usual from the above link.
After performing a clean boot, you may manually download and install the updates from the Microsoft Download Center. Search for the updates using their KB Number from this link:
Hope this resolves the issue. Please get back to us with the updates.
If you find that you are facing any issues in running Windows Updates, including Service Pack, due to any reasons, you might want to check out this Automated Fix It Solution, Windows Update Troubleshooter from Microsoft.

Please boot from the Windows 8 DVD or Windows Recovery Environment and run the command prompt in the repair options and run this:
(replace C: with the drive where you installed Windows 8)
This reverts all pending operations. Now you should go back to Windows 8.
Now copy the folder C:WindowslogsCBS to your desktop, zip it, upload it to OneDrive, create a share link and post the link here. I'll take a look what is causing the loop.

Introduction
Most of the time, Windows Update does its job with little if any attention from us.
While we might check and install updates manually from time to time, most Windows 10 computers are configured to apply important updates automatically, while older versions like Windows 7 and Windows 8 usually apply these fixes the night of Patch Tuesday.
![]()
Sometimes, however, when the patch, or maybe even service pack, is being installed during shutdown or startup, the update installation gets stuck — freezes, locks up, stops, hangs, clocks.. whatever you want to call it. Windows Update is taking forever and it's clear something needs to be done.
The installation of one or more Windows updates is probably stuck or frozen if you see one of the following messages persist for a long time:
You might also see Stage 1 of 1 or Stage 1 of 3, or a similar message prior to the second example. Sometimes Restarting is all you'll see on the screen. There might also be some wording differences depending on which version of Windows you're using.
If you don't see anything at all on screen, especially if you think the updates might have been installed completely but could be the cause of whatever you're experiencing, see our How to Fix Problems Caused by Windows Updates tutorial instead.
Cause of a Frozen or Stuck Windows Update
There are several reasons why the installation or finalization of one or more Windows updates can hang.
Most often, these types of problems are due to a software conflict or a preexisting issue that simply wasn't brought to light until the Windows updates started installing. Much more rarely are they caused by a mistake on Microsoft's part regarding the update itself, but it does happen.
Any of Microsoft's operating systems could experience freezing issues during Windows updates including Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and others.
There's an actual issue with Windows that can cause Windows Update installations to freeze like this but it's only applicable to Windows Vista and only if SP1 hasn't yet been installed. If your computer fits that description, install Windows Vista SP1 or later to solve the problem.
Make Sure the Updates Are Actually Stuck
Some Windows updates can take several minutes or more to configure or install, so you want to make sure the updates are truly stuck before moving on. Trying to fix a problem that doesn't really exist might just create a problem.
You can tell if Windows updates are stuck if nothing happens on screen for 3 hours or more. If there's any wonder after that long, take a look at your hard drive activity light. You'll see either no activity at all (stuck) or very regular but very short flashes of light (not stuck).
Chances are that the updates are hung before the 3-hour mark, but this is a reasonable amount of time to wait and longer than I've ever seen a Windows update take to successfully install.
How to Fix a Stuck Windows Update Installation
It might seem likely that reinstalling Windows, and then these same exact Windows updates, will cause the same problem, but that isn't usually what happens. Since most lock-up issues caused by updates by Microsoft are actually software conflicts, a clean install of Windows, followed promptly by the installation of all available updates, usually results in a perfectly working computer.

Please let me know if you've had success escaping a hung Windows update installation using a method we don't have included in the troubleshooting above. I'd be happy to include it here.
